Nutritionist Lisa Richards Shares 10 Candida Symptoms & How To Treat Them

What is Candida?

Candida albicans is a type of yeast that lives naturally in your gastrointestinal tract and other parts of your body. It's usually kept in check by the ‘friendly’ bacteria in your gut and elsewhere, so it doesn’t cause any problems.

But if the balance between your good and bad bacteria is disrupted, Candida can grow out of control. This can lead to all sorts of unpleasant health issues.

Candida overgrowth isn’t just a yeast infection (although these are pretty nasty!). According to Lisa Richards, creator of the Candida Diet, a Candida imbalance can cause low energy levels, brain fog, unhealthy skin, poor digestion, and even low mood.

10 "Must Know" Symptoms Of Candida Overgrowth

- 1 -

Recurring Yeast Infections

At least 70% of women will get a vaginal yeast infection at some stage in their lives. These are usually caused by Candida albicans.Symptoms include itching, pain during intercourse, white discharge, and unpleasant odor.

- 2 -

Chronic Fatigue

Feeling tired all the time isn’t normal. A gut imbalance could be affecting your energy levels.Candida albicans can interfere with the way your body absorbs nutrients, so your body simply doesn’t get the fuel that it needs.

- 3 -

Brain Fog

Candida albicans produces a toxic metabolite called acetaldehyde. It affects your mental focus by interfering with the red blood cells that carry oxygen to your brain. That can make it difficult to focus and cause brain fog.

- 4 -

Poor Digestion

An overgrowth of Candida albicans can throw your entire digestive system out of balance. If your gut flora are unable to properly break down the foods you eat, you may experience diarrhea, gas, bloating, constipation, cramps, or nausea.

- 5 -

Oral Thrush

Oral thrush is often linked to antibiotics or a high-sugar diet, and is often caused by Candida albicans. Itusually appears as a white layer on the tongue or throat. Inflammation inside the mouth and gums is also common.

- 6 -

Food sensitivities

Candida yeast can weaken the walls of your intestines, allowing food particles to enter your bloodstream. These are identified as foreign substances by your immune system. This reaction can lead to food sensitivities.

- 7 -

Skin & Nail Infections

Your skin and nails have their own microbiome too.Changes in that environment can allow Candida to overwhelm the healthy flora. Warm, moist areas like the armpits and groin are particularly vulnerable.

- 8 -

Weak Immunity

Over 70% of your immune cells are in your gut. A Candida overgrowth can leave you vulnerable to other infections. A Candida imbalance can also affect levels of hormones and neurotransmitters that regulate the immune system.

- 9 -

Low Mood

Research has shown a direct link between gut imbalances and depression. A Candida overgrowth can reduce your levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin (which mostly comes from the gut) and dopamine.

- 10 -

Joint Pain

Candida produces high levels of uric acid, which can build up in the body leading to joint pain andinflammatory arthritis. This is often associated with pain, stiffness, and joint swelling.

How To Treat Candida Overgrowth?

There are four main steps in treating an intestinal Candida overgrowth.

1. Eat A Low-Sugar, Anti-Inflammatory Diet

2. Support Your Liver

3. Take A High-Quality Probiotic

4. Use Natural Antifungals

4 Steps To Treat Candida Overgrowth

- 1 -

Eat A Low-Sugar, Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Candida albicans thrives on a typical Western diet full of added sugars.

It uses those sugars to build its cell walls, to construct biofilms to protect itself from your immune system, and to transform into the fungal form that allows it to spread.

The most important part of the anti-Candida diet is simple – cut all added sugars out of your diet.

Eat a diet rich in high-fiber vegetables, avoid added sugars, and eliminate inflammatory processed foods.

- 2 -

Support Your Liver

Your liver processes and expels Candida toxins from your body, including acetaldehyde, ammonia, and uric acid.

There are some excellent, natural supplements that have been shown to support optimal liver health.

These include milk thistle seed extract, artichoke leaf extract, and dandelion root extract.

By taking a combination of these supplements, you can give your liver the support it needs to process and remove those Candida toxins.

- 3 -

Take A High Quality Probiotic

Probiotics are one of the fastest ways to boost immunity and support healthy digestion, both crucial steps in beating Candida.

Replenishing your gut with healthy, probiotic bacteria is a crucial part of recovering your gut health, fighting Candida overgrowth, and restoring balance to your gut flora.

Taking a good probiotic supplement can give your microbiome the extra boost that it needs, but you need to look for the right kind.

Look for a probiotic with time-release tablets that will deliver the probiotic bacteria safely to your gut.

- 4 -

Use Natural Antifungals

Natural antifungals work by breaking down and destroying the cell walls and biofilm of Candida albicans yeast cells.

Good examples of natural antifungals include caprylic acid and oregano leaf extract, which you can take in supplement form.

You can even integrate antifungals into your diet too – foods like coconut oil, garlic, and rutabaga have quite powerful antifungal properties.

Taking several antifungals at the same time is a good idea because it prevents the Candida from adapting to a single antifungal.
